Church texting service pricing, compared
A church that sends and receives 1,000 texts a month pays $0 for texting on top of a Covenant OS plan from $39 a month. The same texts cost from $14.36 on cOS Free Church Texting with the church's own Twilio account, $18.18 on Planning Center, $20 on Breeze, $35 on Text In Church and $35 on Clearstream. Each Covenant OS plan includes 1,000 texts sent and the first 1,000 replies each month.

Clearstream and Text In Church charge for texting only. The Covenant OS church plan also covers services, volunteers, check-in, giving, groups, websites and Churchgoer, the app members use. A church of 100 pays $59 a month for the plan, a church of 300 pays $119 and a church of 1,000 pays $229. Breeze is $72 a month at every size. Planning Center People is free, and its other products are priced one by one.
How we counted the texts
- Every text counts once, sent or received. A church gets 1 reply for every 10 texts it sends.
- Covenant OS does not charge for the first 1,000 replies a church gets each month, and each reply after that costs 1 cent. Twilio charges for each reply, so cOS Free Church Texting does too. Clearstream and Text In Church say incoming texts are free. Planning Center and Breeze do not say, so we counted only the texts a church sends.
- Every text is up to 160 characters. A text over 160 characters, or over 70 with an emoji, counts as 2 or more texts on every service here.
- Each service uses its smallest plan that covers the texts, or its plan plus overage when that costs less. Clearstream does not bill overages, so a church past its credits moves to the next plan or buys more credits.
- cOS Free Church Texting uses Twilio's lowest carrier fees, 1.18 cents a text and 1.08 cents a reply, plus $1.15 a month for the number and $1.50 a month for the campaign registration.
Where each service is better
Breeze
Breeze includes 250 texts a month. Covenant OS includes 1,000 texts and the first 1,000 replies each month. The Breeze plan is $72 a month at every size. A church over 100 people pays less for the Breeze plan than for the Covenant OS plan.
Planning Center
Planning Center has no monthly texting fee. A church already on Planning Center that sends a few hundred texts pays a few dollars and changes nothing else. People is free, so a church that needs texting and nothing else pays Planning Center $18.18 at 1,000 texts.
Clearstream
Clearstream is a texting tool on its own, and incoming texts are free. A church that keeps its current church software and texts about 1,000 times a month pays a flat $35, and yearly billing saves 16 percent.
Text In Church
Incoming texts are free, calling is an add-on at $10 a seat each month and yearly billing saves 17 percent. A church that texts about 1,000 times a month pays $35 on the Core plan.
cOS Free Church Texting
cOS Free Church Texting has no software fee at all. A church that needs texting and nothing else pays Twilio, about $8.50 a month at 500 texts. Each Covenant OS text past 1,000 costs 1 cent, under Twilio's 1.18 cents, but the savings do not cover the plan price.
Costs to ask about before you sign
- Registration. The phone companies require every church that texts from a local number to register. On Twilio that is $19.50 once and $1.50 a month. Covenant OS files the registration and pays the monthly fees for the number and the campaign.
- Blocks of texts. Breeze charges $10 for each 500 texts past 250, so a church that sends 300 extra texts pays the full $10.
- Long texts. A text over 160 characters, or over 70 with an emoji, bills as 2 or more texts.
- Picture texts. In Covenant OS a picture text you send counts as 3 texts, and pictures your people send are free.
- Replies. Ask whether a reply uses a credit. A church whose members reply often sees the difference each month. In Covenant OS the first 1,000 replies each month are free.
